Simulation of boat hulls can compliment, or completely replace, expensive tow tank experiments. CFD can measure the hull performance to a higher degree of accuracy than standard resistance series predictions and is cheaper than tow tank experimentation. Simulations can measure precise hydrodynamic forces, or be used to produce high quality promotional material.

CFD can be used to simulate a large number of configurations, including keel and rudder designs, and allows comparison of a large number of hull designs. A robust simulation environment allows a wide range of hull geometries to be simulated with minimum of effort, allowing a high through-put of designs. Simulations can give precise data for sailing boat Velocity Prediction Programs (VPP) allowing global optimisation to identify that winning design with a greater degree of accuracy.
